Sona Da Series and Alinagarer Golokdhadha – Treasure Hunt in West Bengal and the influence of colonial and mughal invasions

If you watch hollywood movies, you must be well aware of movies like The National Treasure series, The Mummy series, Tomb Raider(s) and Indiana Jones adventures. If you are looking for such movies in Bengali, with an Indian context and lesser razmataz but with more depth in plot and history, the following 3 movies are recommended. (Just a quick reminder, I do not read or speak or write Bengali and this is purely through the guidance of my Bengali friends and english subtitles in Amazon Prime0

Subarna Sen (Sonada) Series – 2 Movies directed by Dhrubo Banerjee
Guptodhoner Sandhane – Released 2018

Subarna Sen (Sonada) professor of history, his nephew Abir (Arjun Chakraborty) along with Jhinuk (Isha Saha) Abir’s love interest and best friend, uncover treasure clues in an ancestral home of Manikantapur left for Abir by uncle Harinarayan Singha Roy (Goutam Ghose) after his death in so called paranormal circumstances.

What follows is an edge of the seat treasure hunt thriller along with a rich learning of 350-year-old Mughal history. It is like a Dan Brown novel completely made interesting by its clues and the people involved. We can see Rajatabha Dutta play the negative role of Dashanan Da (You can see him in a close to negative role as a rich and nasty jockey in one of the Byomkesh movies but that is reserved for another blogpost :)!)

Durgeshgorer Guptodhon – Released 2019
Professor Subarna Sen continues his adventure in this second franchise of Sona Da Series along with Abir and Jhinuk at an ancestral mansion at Durgeshgor. A student of Sona Da takes him to his grandfather’s mansion (who was an erstwhile zamindar and a renowned artist of Bengal). The myth of a massive treasure and a series of clues built around Durga Puja and its significance leaves us intrigued and interested in this thriller in unearthing one of the greatest treasures of Bengal.

Alinagarer Golokdhadha released in 2018 directed by Sayantan Ghosal

While the above 2 movies are fun intrigue and edge of seat, there is another movie thats in similar lines but a bit more darker, subdued yet powerfully informative about West Bengal History. A mix of Mughal and Colonial influence, Battle of Plassey, Ledikeni (Bengali Dessert), clues and revelations of individual’s past etc make it a more interesting yet dark movie to go for.

For those who do not know Bengali history these 3 movies are a good start

All these movies are available on Amazon Prime . Enjoy watching!
